DRIVING WHILE SUSPENDED OR REVOKED

It is illegal in Virginia to drive while a person's license is suspended or revoked. A third or subsequent violation includes a mandatory jail sentence. For each conviction of this crime, the license in suspended for an additional period of time.

Even a person who has never had a license in Virginia or has never lived in Virginia (such as a resident of the District of Columbia or Maryland) can have his privilege to drive in Virginia suspended and revoked. This often occurs when an out-of-state driver comes into Virginia, gets a speeding ticket or other violation, and fails to pay the fines and costs for the ticket. Once the deadline for paying the fines and costs has passed, the out-of-state driver's privilege to drive in Virginia is suspended.

This offense is very strictly punished in Virginia.
